Minimalism with a Baby

It’s the middle of the night, pregnancy hormones are keeping you awake, and that online shopping binge is calling your name. But, just hold on a minute! Before you go buying all those bits and gadgets, come see how you can be a minimalist even with your baby!

BUILD YOUR COMMUNITY.

You know what they say — it takes a village to raise a child. Well, they are right! Instead of spending your time shopping, take the time to meet other moms. New moms will be able to understand what you’re going through, while seasoned mamas will be a wealth of knowledge. They can help you determine what you actually need vs what you think you’ll need.

BORROW WHAT YOU CAN.

While it’s perfectly normal to buy those few onesies that you absolutely swooned over, a great way to load up on baby items is by borrowing what you can from friends and family. Newborns change so quickly that having a whole new wardrobe of clothing (or a million gadgets) could go to waste. Your little one will most likely live in easy-to-remove rompers and rely on your for feedings, so do yourself a favor, skip the complicated outfits and all the fancy bottle warmers.

As your little one continues to get older, keep reaching out to family and friends to find other items you need. You’ll be surprised to find how many people are willing to lend you things you need rather than having them collect dust!

GET WHAT YOU NEED IF/WHEN YOU NEED IT.

It’s easy to get ahead of ourselves when a baby is entering the family. Purchasing toys that we think they will want, clothing that is 3 sizes too big, etc. might make you feel as if you’re ready for whatever comes, but in all honesty, it’s just adding clutter.

Instead of buying everything up front, wait until you see that your child needs a certain item. You’d be surprised to see how often your kid wants to play with a shoebox instead of that new toy that you saw on TV! As you phase in one new item, be it clothes or toys, phase out one old item. This will allow you to keep only what you need! And if you’re lucky, you’ll be doing what others did for you and helping another mom with things she may need.

While it’s easy to get wrapped up in all the excitement of a baby, we hope you’ll be able to use these tips to save yourself some money and keep the cluttered chaos in your house to a minimum!
